Eugenia Carr, the daughter of detained Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, says that Ukraine is seeing a reversal of the values of the Orange Revolution and that, cruelly, history is repeating itself yet again, for both the nation and her family in a candid, new exclusive TV interview for democracy4us.org.
The elegant 31 year old Mrs. Carr speaks of an ?act of revenge? being taken against her mother, who is twice a former prime minister and was one of the leaders of the Orange Revolution, referred to as Maiden, or ''The Peoples' Square," by Ukrainians.
?What?s going on here I think is a complete reversal of the democratic values, of justice, of everything, we fought for ? what Ukrainian people fought for ? during the Orange Revolution. Some values were born then and now it?s going back to an authoritarian, Soviet type of system,? says Mrs Carr.
She recalls a time, 10 years ago, when her mother was imprisoned by the regime of President Leonid Kuchma for 42 days, on eventually dismissed charges, which she attributes to her mother's tough stance on fighting corruption in the energy sector. This occurred when Ms. Tymoshenko was Minister for Fuel and Energy. She was eventually released with the judge ruling there was no case to answer for. ?It seems to me we are living through this d?j? vu that happened during the Kuchma, rule. Now the same is happening.?
However, if the judiciary at the time was able to declare the arrest illegal, citing the law of the state, the current judges no longer seem to know or care about a constitution according to international monitors who have been watching the local judiciary.
Ms. Tymoshenko is facing a trial in a Kyiv court for allegedly exceeding her powers when, as Prime Minister, in 2009, she authorized a gas agreement to be signed with Russia that ended a damaging dispute that saw gas supplies disrupted to EU states during winter months. Her trial began on June 24, 2011. On August 5, 2011, she was arrested and taken into detention for contempt of court. Since then, her defense lawyers have had 13 motions rejected by the court for the detention restriction to be lifted so that she can be released on bail.
Local and world leaders, governments and NGOs have stepped up expressing their concern about the trial and its larger ramifications. Among vocal critics of Yanukovych?s actions are the US, Canadian, German, French, Visogard, Australian, and Russian governments, as well as the EU, which the Ukraine is eager to join. Senator John McCain stated, ??the implications for this go far beyond the fate of one person. Ultimately, what is at stake is the future of freedom and democracy in Ukraine.??
Mrs. Carr says that every day the law is being broken in court and that it?s hard to watch. She says that her mother ?has become a symbol for democracy and freedom in Ukraine.? She talks about the fury of the Yanukovych regime. ?It?s obvious that the system is trying to take her out of the political game; it?s very transparent,? she added.
Besides suffering the torments of a daughter robbed of a mother for an unknown length of time, Mrs. Carr also bears the responsibility of serving as her mother?s public attorney, partially so as she is allowed to visit her on a regular basis, a privilege denied to other relatives. Also, as she sits poised and speaks eloquently with a hint of a British accent, it is noticeable that the young woman, who dresses in a fashion that pays ode to her mother?s own unique style, has an extreme burden upon her young shoulders.
When asked what will happen if Ukraine loses this battle between democracy and authoritarianism in which her mother has become, by the very definition of the word, a martyr, she replies: "We risk losing any hope, any future of being a European civilized state.? Society seems to agree, although the people have as yet been hesitant to take concise action, lacking a true internal leader to organize them in revolt or the tangible support of the West.
